Animal Flow

What is Animal Flow?
Animal Flow® was created by Mike Fitch, fusing elements of multiple body-weight training disciplines, along with exercises that actually mimic the movements of animals. The resulting workout incorporates quadrupedal and ground‐based exercises in multi‐planar, fluid movements.
Athletes and fitness enthusiasts of all levels can realise significant benefits from the practice, including increased mobility, flexibility, stability, power, endurance, skill and neuromuscular communication.
Easily tailored to individuals of all fitness levels, Animal Flow is an incredibly versatile workout that can be integrated into existing fitness routines by utilising various components for dynamic warm‐ups, interval training, circuit training, and skills building. It has its own unique language in terms of ‘call-outs’ that add to the fun of learning this skill.
PAULA PANDA IS A CERTIFIED ANIMAL FLOW INSTRUCTOR

Fusing body-weight disciplines
A lot of people ask ‘What is Animal Flow® based on?‘ The answer is that is draws upon multiple body-weight training disciplines. You may recognize hand balancing in the static frogs; break dancing in the crocodile rolls; gymnastics in the rolling patterns; parkour
training in the travelling apes; yoga like movements in the scorpion reaches, the list goes on.
Of course, animal movements (along with many of the other body-weight training disciplines) have been used for thousands of years to improve health and vitality.
Martial artists, gymnasts, traceurs, b‐boys, yogis – body-weight athletes from all kinds of backgrounds all recognize part of their own training in Animal Flow movements. Additionally, the ‘flow’ component, where the moves are linked together in continuous flows of energy. What makes Animal Flow unique is the way in which these elements are synthesized in a new way.
The Animal Flow workout certainly evokes a sense of fun and creativity, but it is still at its heart based solidly in science. It draws upon multiple, proven concepts within exercise science and kinesiology to formulate its overall approach to fitness and movement in general.
One of the most important aspects of Animal Flow is that with so many movements and combinations, it can be altered to achieve specific results. It can be utilised in a multitude of ways tailored to your own needs and training style – scroll down for examples relating to Animal Flow for Combat Sports.

After 15 minutes of learning some of the basic moves, we built this little flow which Jordan nailed in no time!

Paula's the BEST at teaching Animal Flow!
Working with Paula was incredible. During the Animal Flow session I felt very present and in touch with my own instincts. It was great to explore new movement patterns and I could feel improvements across my mobility and core stability, all whilst giving me better body awareness.
Paula makes the sessions so fun whilst creating such a comfortable atmosphere. She hits the spot just right between nurturing and coaching – she knows how to squeeze the best out of me!
I think Animal Flow is a great stand alone class, but I also see the huge cross over benefits for improving my performance when I’m boxing, running and in the gym. I’ve tried Animal Flow with other instructors, but could never get into it. Paula is by far the best!

Thelma, aged 92 trying Animal Flow 🙂
Meet Thelma who is NINETY TWO!
She had never tried Animal Flow before and thought she wouldn’t be able to support herself on her wrists, let alone build a flow.
Thelma came regularly to classes, and to her delight, she found that she gained flexibility back in her toes, her wrists felt much stronger and her reactions (mind body connections) were sharper. Her overall confidence in her physical abilities improved tremendously.. and we all had great fun too!

Paula's Animal Flow is brilliant!
I had my knee reconstructed approx 6 years ago following 20+ years of doing gymnastics and am still slightly picky and apprehensive when trying out new exercise classes.
Paula’s Animal Flow class is fantastic! Not only does she allow sufficient time to learn the exercises properly she was amazing at guiding me through the class slightly redesigning the exercises to work better for my knee – just brilliant.
A big thank you from me.

Multi Planar flow to help with control and proprioception (awareness of body movement) which helps increase stability.
Animal Flow for Combat Sports
Using the Animal Flow multi-planar, form-specific, ground based system, you’ll train and condition skills across all your bio-motor abilities that are required for effective fighting/combat; mobility, stability, strength, power, speed, endurance and co-ordination.
The body knows only movement, not muscles
The human body works to produce movement, and these movements are controlled by the Central Nervous System. The body makes every attempt to move in the most effective and efficient way, so as not to waste energy, and therefore uses muscles in concert to generate skilled movements.
Combat Sports (and life in general for that matter) demands that the body moves freely through space, not within the confines of a machine or some restricted range of motion. Most traditional hypertrophy (increase and growth of muscle cells) and strength training favour the sagittal (forward) plane in a training environment. All combat practitioners need to be effective in multi-directional movement to be effective in their sport, and Animal Flow can help with that and more.
Panda’s Animal Flow for Fighters Coaching Sessions focuses on the primary movement patterns that mixed martial artists need to integrate as part of their tool sets. At the heart of Animal Flow are the principles of whole‐body full range of motion training which requires simultaneous strength, control, fluidity and movement ‐ all creating heightened body awareness – and these will prove crucial for the Combat Fighter’s physical preparation.
Take MMA for example – we know that success often comes from a high level of expertise and skill within multiple combat arts, and to this end any competitor needs to spend time training sport specifc or technique focused sessions, especially leading up to a fight. As a consequence strength and conditioning sessions might receive less dedicated training time.
So Panda looks at creating sessions that maximise the efficiency of any training week, and create specific Animal Flow lessons that fit in beautifully as an ancillary practice, which addresses all the key bio-motor abilities and is not too time consuming (typically 45 mins – 60 mins max).
In addition to serving as great training exercises, they also provide brilliant dynamic correspondence into combat sports.
For example, she looks at increasing hip opening with Crab, Ape and Scorpion to help with roundhouse kicks, Travelling Forms to create high tension to help the joints ability to ‘stiffen’ when needed, for example when punching, and some high levels of isometric tension in switches between Beast & Crab – these help increase a fighter’s ability to exert and withstand force.
In her sessions, expect to learn a number of isometric moves that will help improve grappling and holds, quadruple movements and rotational activations (core) that will help you to resist take downs, tempo and energy redirection to help improve your speed to strength when repeatedly kicking…
Through stretching, switches and transitions, drills, and building new mobility flows each week, this ancillary training will soon become your secret weapon to helping improve your combat skills.

I now incorporate Paula's Animal Flow techniques into my daily Krav practice.
I was very lucky to have had the pleasure of attending an Animal Flow class run by Paula. As well as the class being very enjoyable and fun, Paula was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Paula not only verbally instructed us but also visibly executed each motion, which helps with the way I learn. I found the Animal Flows extremely helpful to create more control in my movements and, as a result of this I have incorporated this into my daily workout.
Paula was able to adapt these flows so everyone was capable of taking part in the class. So, for this reason, I would encourage anyone to add this to their exercise regime or even to help if you’re getting back into training.
After the class, Paula also took the time to help with giving me some more information and help on how to help fix a long-term injury.
